The company has established itself as a key supplier that can deliver high quality products at competitive prices, on time. Alam Steel was founded in Dubai, UAE in 1979 and is headquartered in the Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Alam Steel Ltd.: Alam Steel stocks and distributes steel and cement to major construction, engineering and fabrication firms in the region. The Company maintains substantial inventory of all steel products in over 2 million square feet of logistics facilities around the region. Alam uses its extensive supplier network to procure quality products from around the world. Investments in warehousing and transport have created a streamlined supply chain allowing Alam Steel to meet clients’ needs for materials to be delivered on a Just-In-Time basis.

Alam Steel Industries (ASI): ASI processes reinforcement bars in a 20,000 square meter facility located in the Dubai Investment Park. Alam Steel Industries is one of the largest factories of its kind with an annual capacity of over 500,000 tons. ASI became the first rebar processing factory in the Middle East to be awarded the prestigious UK based CARES Certification in October 2007.

Macsteel Gulf FZCO: The group has entered into a Joint Venture with Macsteel, a leading global steel firm to set up a steel service centre that processes plates and sections for the Oil & Gas, Dredging, Quarrying, Yellow Goods and Steel Fabrication Sector. The factory is based in the Jebel Ali Free Zone and is the first of its kind in the Middle East.

Alam Steel International: Alam Steel International established its presence in Turkey last year and is expanding to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and India.

History of Alam Steel

The Alam Steel Group was founded in 1979 by its current chairman, Mr. Shyam Alamchand Bhatia. The company can trace its roots as a small building materials trading firm under the name Alam Traders LLC and was engaged in the supply of steel, cement, and timber to the growing construction industry in the UAE. The firm grew to become one of the largest diversified building material trading firms in the region.

  • In 2002, the firm decided to specialize in the steel industry and was rebranded as Alam Steel Ltd. The company was focused in developing into a leading diversified steel distribution and processing company.
  • In 2007, Alam Steel Industries was established to process reinforcement bars for the construction industry. With an annual capacity of 360,000 tons per year, it is one of the largest processing centres in the region and was the first to attain a UK CARES certification.
  • In 2008, Macsteel Gulf FZCO was setup as a 50:50 JV between the Alam Steel Group and Macsteel Group, one of the largest steel firms in the world to process flat and long products for the Hydrocarbon Industry.

Today under the leadership of the Bhatia family, the Group continues to prosper in the region and embodies the values instilled by its founder for all its stakeholders.

Dear Stakeholders,
Even after 32 years, coming into work every day at the company I founded still excites me. The energy and passion I see in our team is my proudest legacy. We started as a two man trading company and today we have built a strong diversified business within the steel sector that has played an integral role in the industrialization and modernization of the UAE.

Today as we look to expand our geographic reach across the Middle-East, North African and the Indian Subcontinent, we are embarking on a new chapter in our history where we aim to become a global business.

As we look to the future it is amazing how the lessons of business don’t change from the past. Our core values as a business and for me personally remain the same:

I have led my life and my business with these core values at the forefront and they have always served me well. Today I focus on my charitable foundation, Shyam Bhatia Cricket for Care which aims to bring the sport to the less fortunate children in this world; the concept behind the foundation is to teach children these very core values which I learnt as a young man playing cricket for my state in India and which gave me the tools needed to succeed in business.

Our corporate sustainability practices include the promotion of economic development through consistent profitability and job creation; environmental stewardship through energy conservation initiatives and reducing/minimizing pollution; and social well being by instituting high quality labor, health and safety standards. We also strive to be good corporate citizens in our business communities.

Consistent with our decentralized operating structure, we believe the most effective and efficient way to preserve and protect our vital natural resources is on a local basis, where each of our facilities is responsible for communication, implementation and adherence to the Company-wide policy to preserve and protect the environment and comply with environmental laws, regulations and the legitimate interests of our communities.

Alam systematically evaluates the performance of our companies in that regard.

Our business, by its nature, does not have a significant impact on the environment. We do not consume large amounts of energy nor do we create meaningful amounts of air or water pollution, since we do not make the metal we sell and do not paint, coat, or manufacture any end products. We have, however, found ways within our business to consume less fuel by keeping our trucks well maintained and in compliance with current emission standards. Additionally, we use natural or energy efficient lighting in many of our plants, recycle all metal and wood used in our operations and use propane fuel to operate forklifts. We have contributed to our customer’s sustainability requirements by providing them with steel from mills that recycle scrap and reducing the carbon footprint in the transportation of steel to the customer.

We constantly look for other such ways to help minimize the use of natural resources and the impact of our business operations on the environment.
